A family secret is revealed during an ill-fated--yet hilarious--trip to Disney World.

Sixteen-year-old Hannah Sampson knows her family is not what you would call normal. Her father compulsively buys dented cans and has a particular fondness for cans without labels, which are extremely discounted because their contents are a mystery. Her mother takes countless pictures of her family and then glues them down into the pages of her scrapbooks, but does not allow anyone to look at them. Ryan, Hannah's mischievous fourteen-year-old brother, is headed straight for the remedial track at the local community college, if he's lucky. Ben, her eight-year-old brother, is a walking sound effects machine, who prefers to communicate with noises rather than words. While Hannah is focused on escaping her working-class Connecticut suburb, she also finds herself being tugged back home as she worries about her brother Ben.

Hannah's parents inflict one last family vacation on the Sampson children, a trip that goes comically wrong almost from the get-go. Hannah is forced to confront her family's past in Disney World, of all places, when an emotional argument prompts her parents to disclose a secret they have been keeping from the children for sixteen years. Ultimately, she must decide whether to leave her hometown and not look back, or to focus on helping her family.

Dented Cans eBook Heather Walsh

The story is told by the oldest child in the family and we readers get introduced to her very dysfunctional parents and siblings...and even extended family on the occasional holiday visit.
For most of the story you get to experience everything and everyone through a cynical teenager's eyes; sometimes caustic, sometimes funny.
She thinks her Dad is a real nut job with his obsession to save money by buying hundreds of dented and unmarked cans of food. Her Mother develops instant headaches at the slightest sign of any controversy and will never answer any questions about the past.
This girl wants to just graduate from school, and leave this podunk town and crazy family far behind and never look back.
The family vacation to Disney World becomes her ah ha moment. And the point in which she starts to understand the meaning of family, her family.
I think you'll enjoy the story...the author told it well. I hope to read other books of hers.

Dented Cans eBook Heather Walsh Reviews

this was an excellent, quick read about 16 year old Hannah and her two younger brothers, and how each of the three copes with their parents' weirdness & quirks. Near the end of the book, as the blurb teases, the kids & the reader find out what is at the heart of the weirdness & quirks. the author has very convincingly captured the voice of a adolescent suburban girl who's longing for escape- even though i am much older, Hannah rang absolutely 100% true to me. i also found the brothers to be well defined (if someone what inacessible, as it should be, because the story is from Hannah's POV). The parents were more broad strokes, but there were more than enough details to elevate them into true "characterhood".
i'll be looking forward to more from this talented author.
Dented Cans was a fun, surprising, and a character building book. I loved it. I would say it is a young adult book for a person who wants to walk in another teens shoes shoes for a little while and sympathize and laugh with them. It is well written and compared to books written by famed S. Myers. But similar in that it has the many of the same markings of a modern YA novel that a teen would love to get their hands on. I felt like I was watching a movie but I was reading it instead. The author does a great job portraying each character clearly so that you easily slip in their world. An entertaining but cultured & fun novel. (Perfect book for a long plane ride).
Dented Cans is the heartwarming, humorous, and surprising coming-of-age story of Hannah Sampson and life with her quirky cast of family members. I really enjoyed reading this book because it kept bringing back memories and emotions of my own growing up days with my own perceived, not-so-perfect family and life situations (I had visions of my own mother making powdered milk - yuck!). I often caught myself laughing out loud or feeling other mixed emotions throughout the story, and I grew wanting to befriend and root for Hannah because I wanted her to hang in there and succeed despite what she saw as drawbacks in her life. The Sampson family dynamics kept my interest throughout the book. The author, Ms. Walsh, gave just enough insight via Hannah of her folks and two brothers that really carried me throughout the book up to the end. You grow to like them all, especially during that fateful vacation to that perfect land of Disney World when Hannah gets caught off guard by some deep family secret (every family's got them). Nothing is ever what it seems. And even though I would say the book is targeted for a much younger audience, it still had something for this older guy. Dented Cans is like the perfect look into one's imperfect world; and what you might find in there along the way may just surprise you.
I thought this book was interesting and well written. The "hoarder" shows are popular now, and it deals with the impact of that condition on the children in the family. I also liked the family's unique take on dealing with their troubled child. My only let down was the ending - I wanted it to go on longer and come to a more definitive resolution for the main character, the voice of the novel. I would read this author again.
This book was was enjoyable and it allowed us to see how strong a can be when faced with loss and tragedy. The family dynamics in the house is so intriguing, the older children fighting each other, protecting the the youngest... How one teen chooses to cope by conformance and the other rebelling... flip flopping ... at times it was difficult to tell who was the parent.

Ah yes the parents... the dented cans in the basement.
Great characters that I grew to love. Enjoyed this book very much.
Although I read Dented Cans on a packed airplane, the book was so funny that I found myself laughing out loud numerous times. The story is told by a 16 year old girl who shares her amusing views and insights on her extremely quirky, somewhat dysfunctional, but all-to-real family (because let's face it, every family has its oddities). I found the scenes from Disney World to be especially hilarious. I love Disneyland and have taken my own kids many times, but by taking the perspective of a 16 year old girl who does not want to be there with her family, the author finds it all-to-easy to see absurdity all over the Disney formula and this makes for a very funny read. When the story takes an unexpected turn at the end, you realize how real these characters have become - perhaps because you see pieces of your own family in them.

Anyone who has been part of a family (ok everyone) will relate to this material and will enjoy reading this book. I look forward to reading more from this author but apparently this is the only book she has written so far -- fingers crossed she'll write more.
