"Bicycle Moon" is a fictional story of a man caught up in a major crime for which he is not responsible. He flees on bicycle across the eastern and central United States, having many adventures along the way, and meeting many interesting people. He gets involved in a number of organized multi-day bike rides, including a major one in Iowa.

Bicycle Moon Chuck Oestreich Books

At the very end of the book the author notes that he is a first time novelist, and it kind of shows. It was an entertaining, if slightly implausible, read, but badly needed an editor. The book could have been about a third shorter simply by reducing the number of times the characters repeat themselves (and that's not counting the dozen or so paragraphs that are literally duplicated - but that could have happened when it was converted to the Kindle format). Everything the characters think or say will be said three or four more times before the scene moves on.

There are also massive consistency problems. A character is driving a blue Pontiac at one point, but it becomes a brown Toyota Camry in the next chapter, before once again being a blue Pontiac later in the book. The address of the house the main character is looking for changes. What was Jeffrey, Kentucky through most of the book becomes Jeffrey, Tennessee at the end. At one point Rosie is telling Dis about Gloria's past, a few chapters later neither Rosie nor Dis have any idea about Gloria's past. A character named Sam is suddenly named Jack at one point. And, given the author's background as the secretary of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, I would expect him to know that a ride that follows the west side of the Mississippi River will never go through Illinois. I would also suggest skipping chapter nine - it's awful.

Despite all of that, there were parts of the book that showed potential for future efforts to be pretty good... as long as they get looked over by an editor first.

Bicycle Moon Chuck Oestreich Books Reviews

This is a peculiar book that doesn't have any page numbers and doesn't seem to have been edited. The premise of the plot is preposterous and the subsequent series of circumstances are likewise improbable. There is a surprising amount of sex, violence and sexual violence. There are some events probably involving TOMRV and RAGBRAI (relabeled BTMRV and BABI), which I presume is supposed to make this interesting to cyclists. It didn't work for me.
This is a good mystery with a lot of riding. If you ride a bike you will like this. If, in addition, you are from the midwest you will love this. As a bonus it is well written and edited.
Kept my interest all the way through. I like bike people and I like mysteries, so it was a good combo. Also nice to see a good story from a local author.
The book gives great insight into biking tours and how they are organized. It is a story of murder, intrigue, with love interest also. The last chapters keep you on edge to see how it will all play out . Check this book out.
Chuck's a buddy who organizes the GITAP bike tour in Illinois each year. This is his first novel. The hero is a cyclist, riding through many places in the midwest in this murder mystery.
I live 30 miles from Davenport, also ride bicycle, Also being an retired police officer, it piqued my interest, lot of little twists, I became part of the actioin, I picture myself being there. When I can get into the scene, it comes alive, kept my interest, I would like to seem Chuck Oestreich write some more books.... doesn't have to have a bicycle in it, but if it does, it oughta be another great read....
