We’ve all pretended to be something we’re not. But Rupen Najarian, an eighty-three-year-old musician living in Glendale, California, has built his whole existence on a lie.
The day his village in Turkey was torched by soldiers, seven-year-old Rupen became the last survivor of his family. Bearing a terrible secret, he joined the Armenian “Trail of Tears” into the Syrian Desert.
Now, in 1992, Maestro Rupen is rich and famous with the trappings of high-class Armenian living thanks to his talent on the duduk, an ancient Caucasian flute. As he performs at his birthday tribute, an earthquake—literal and figurative—rattles his world.
Because if you have a secret, everything can be undone by a single person who knows the truth.
Meet Haik, a twenty-year-old Armenian immigrant who becomes stalker, blackmailer and Rupen’s personal Lucifer. But even as this young man gains control of the Maestro’s life, he soon realizes he’s in over his head. For Rupen is more than just the master of the duduk...
From the wastes of the Syrian Desert to the streets of Beirut, from the canals of Venice to the sprawl of contemporary Los Angeles, The Musician’s Secret is a compelling tale of hidden identities, intricate mysteries and the tantalizing possibility of redemption.

The Musician Secret eBook Litty Mathew Reviews
This book was very hard to put down. I loved the characters - they were flawed, but not unlikeable - especially the antagonist. I used to live in Turkey and have had some interactions with the Armenian population there, but the genocide is so covered up. It's incredibly interesting to get this view from Armenians who haven't had to cover up their response. Overall, it's a great read, especially, when you spend an hour on the train every day going to work.
The Musician's Secret is a smart, well-crafted page-turner that will leave you with a tear in your eye and love in your heart. This beautiful tale is full of characters and themes we can all relate to -- love, lust, loss, redemption, family and, ultimately, forgiveness. It is also full of Armenian culture, history (both here and abroad) and an intimate glimpse into Glendale, a section of LA I previously knew very little about. If you have ever lived a lie, been haunted by your past or struggled to forgive, you must read this book!
I loved this book, and although I guessed what the musician's secret was before I finished reading it, it was so interesting that I had to keep reading to the end. I like reading about different cultures and their histories, and this book about Armenians was extremely interesting. I cried towards the end, and any book that makes me cry is a book that has drawn me in and made me feel another person's pain. I was fully absorbed in the story, and I love when a book has that effect on me. I would recommend this book highly!
I had read advance excerpts of this book and was so taken that I had been eagerly awaiting the chance to read the entire book. Now that I have had a chance to read it cover to cover, I know why. I fell in love all over again with the characters and loved my time with them as I read this delicious book, every moment captivating and a revelation.
Expecting a heavy read that brutally described the atrocities of the Armenian genocide, The Musician's Secret was one of those book club selections that I was initially not interested in reading.
However, from the first chapter, I was hooked. The plot has several twists and turns. The characters are interesting and for the most part believable. The description of Armenian history, culture and duduk music is fascinating. The book also addresses universal issues of family, aging and dying. I particularly enjoyed reading a novel that described romance between people over seventy.
Despite my initial apprehension, it was a great book club read!
Litty Mathew’s book grapples with the complicated issues of generational and cultural identity by exposing the wounds -- still fresh a century later -- created by atrocities of the Armenian genocide in Turkey and the refugees’ death march through the Syrian desert. Through her characters, we come to understand how the genocide has served to tighten the grip on long-held customs and beliefs through time so the tragic piece of Armenian history doesn’t fade from global consciousness. Despite the heavy subject matter, the book is a fast read with poignant writing and humor throughout. Highly recommend.
I loved this book. My book club read The Musician's Secret and we were able to go to Litty Mathew's reading. She had a world-famous duduk player (think the Gladiator score) and it helped me understand the mysterious and yearning tones of this instrument. I read the rest of the book to duduk music which really deepened my experience of the novel. The locales in Los Angeles and Glendale are so familiar. You know she's talking Porto's Bakery...yum. Her imagery of food is incredible. She must have been a food writer. The locales in the Middle East are also familiar. When you read so much of the strife occurring in Syria, you're able to envision what these places such as Raqqa must have been like so long ago. I highly recommend this book. A little duduk music, cup of tea, and rosewater cookies is a nice added touch to curling up on the couch with your book or .
